American Red Cross seeks blood donation amid nationwide shortage

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – As Thanksgiving approaches and the holidays quickly approach, the American Red Cross calls on donors to continue making appointments now and in the weeks to come to help overcome an emergency nationwide blood shortage.

Officials say the current blood supply is the lowest the Red Cross has seen at this time of year in more than a decade.

Those who donate November 1-12 will be automatically entered to win a trip for two to Hawaii, and those who donate November 1-23 will receive a $ 10 Amazon.com gift card.

At least 10,000 additional donations are needed each week over the next several weeks to meet patient needs ahead of the next holiday season, which always presents seasonal challenges for blood drive.
