“We are showing that the streets are one of our most valuable assets in the city and how they can be used for more than just vehicles,” said Anna Chamberlin, associate director of the planning and sustainability division. to the district transportation department.

The event will include live music, entertainment, demonstrations and a fitness class.

“Many businesses near and along the route will also be holding activities,” Chamberlin told WTOP.

Shared electric vehicle company Lime will teach people how to safely ride e-scooters and e-bikes.

Street closures will begin at 7 a.m. The City recommends taking public transportation to get there.
The district launched Open Streets in 2019, closing several miles off George Avenue Northwest. (the 2020s were canceled due to the pandemic).

This year, Open Streets will take place in all neighborhoods, including a larger event on June 4, along 7th Street NW, through Shaw and Chinatown in Wards 2 and 6.

To paraphrase Shakespeare, it’s the summer of discontent for new car buyers. Dealer inventories remain thin, while consumer demand is still strong, with the two forces conspiring to drive transaction prices ridiculously high. The average monthly payment for a new vehicle now stands at $700, with down payments hovering around six thousand dollars.

Leasing, rather than buying and financing a new model, remains a viable route to lowering both payments and upfront costs, but for a term of two or three years. Still, those who can stay flexible about their vehicle choices can still find genuinely affordable rental deals on select models, though not as rich or plentiful as we’ve seen in recent months.

To that, we were able to uncover 17 current new-vehicle deals on offer this month with monthly payments near or below the $200 threshold, and we feature them below. The selection runs the gamut, from small SUVs and crossover sedans to a pair of electrified rides, including the Nissan Leaf EV, and the all-wheel-drive Subaru Legacy midsize sedan. The Blue Plate Special of the bunch is the Hyundai Venue subcompact crossover, which costs just $159 a month, with just under $3,000 down (which includes the first month’s payment).

All offers shown here are valid until the end of May and generally apply to base models in a given range, with options, taxes and fees not included. Note that the best rental terms are almost always limited to those with the best credit ratings. And be aware that some of these offers may not be available in all regions of the country, or may have slightly more expensive terms depending on the region, so be sure to log on to a manufacturer’s website under an “offers specials” or “local offers” or contact a local retailer to see what’s on offer where you live.

Shanghai recorded no car sales last month as China continued its strict pandemic control measures.

China’s largest metropolitan area, which has a population of 25 million, has been under strict lockdown for seven weeks. Authorities have ordered people to stay home and close many businesses, as they try to stamp out the city’s worst Covid outbreak.

Although authorities announced on Monday that they would allow “low levels of activity” in some areas, many residents told CNN they had not been allowed out of their residential compounds.

Covid restrictions have had a severe impact on the city’s auto market – almost all dealerships have been closed and no sales have been recorded, according to a statement from the Shanghai Automobile Sales Trade Association released on Monday.

Overall car sales in China fell 46% in April to 1.2 million vehicles, compared with March. It was the worst April sales in a decade, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said last week.

China has imposed tough restrictions as it battles the biggest Covid outbreak in more than two years. More than 30 cities in China are under full or partial lockdown, affecting up to 187 million people across the country, according to CNN calculations.

Shanghai is extremely important for the Chinese automotive industry.

The city ranks first in overall car sales – around 736,700 new Vehicles were sold in Shanghai last year, the most of any Chinese city, according to statistics from the country’s top insurance regulator.

It’s also a major manufacturing hub, home to automakers like Tesla and Volkswagen, as well as major parts suppliers Bosch and ZF Group.

The shutdowns in Shanghai and other cities have caused massive supply chain disruptions and hit consumer spending in the world’s second-largest economy.

Tesla sales in China fell 98% in April from the previous month, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association. Its production at the Shanghai plant also fell by 81%. It’s a sharp turn for the US automaker after a strong start to the year in mainland China.

Toyota said last week it had suspended operations at 14 production lines at eight factories in Japan, due to parts shortages resulting from the lockdown in Shanghai.

Nissan Motor also reported a 46% drop in sales in China from a year ago.

The Japanese make excellent technological products, exhibiting a level of quality rarely seen in today’s mass-produced world. This meticulousness extends to their automotive industry, with Japanese companies creating some of the best cars ever made.

JDM the cars, although brilliantly made, are usually overengineered to such an extent that the full potential of the car cannot be unleashed without the aid of a few modifications. Take the Toyota Supra MK4 for example. A new owner could get around 600bhp out of a stock engine with relatively easy mods, making the stock Supra MK4 extremely rare. While it’s fun to modify and customize a car and outfit it with a striking body kit, bigger turbos and go crazy with changing parts, some Japanese cars just don’t need be modified. It’s because they’re good enough already, or they’ve become so legendary that the cars are worth a lot of money in factory condition.

So while it’s fun to outfit your Japanese car with big spoilers, silly wheels, and Bosozoku exhausts, some cars should just be left alone. Here are 5 Japanese cars that you would never dare to modify, and 5 that would make excellent projects.

ten Would not dare to modify – Toyota 2000GT

The Toyota 2000GT is one of the coolest cars ever made. It was Toyota’s first attempt at building a sports car, and it was the genesis point of all the legendary coupes that graced the Japanese marque’s dealerships. The 2000GT wasn’t fast, but it had character and an impressive 2.0-liter inline-6 inspired by the Crown sedan. The 2000GT produced 148 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque, with power sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission and a top speed of 135 mph.

The greatest thing about the 2000GT was its history in a James Bond movie. Everyone was given the green light, but when Sean Connery arrived in Japan for filming, he was too big for the car. Toyota then cut the roof off two cars and called it the 2000GT Roadster – of which only two exist. You would never dare modify a single thing on a 2000GT.

9 Would not dare to modify – Lexus LFA

The Lexus LFA has been heralded as the best sounding car on the planet, with some claiming it is the best car ever made. Although the second statement may cause some debate, the first is certainly true. The entire LFA experience has been meticulously engineered and tested to deliver the glorious sound it produces.

The LFA isn’t the fastest, nimbiest or prettiest supercar ever made, but it’s one of the most perfect. Yes, it lacks cupholders, the infotainment system leaves something to be desired and the seatbelt situation is idiotically complicated, but the rest of the car is bespoke – designed specifically for the LFA. It’s a supercar that needs nothing more to make it perfect because when you drive it all the little worries become an afterthought next to the screaming V10.

8 Would not dare to modify – Toyota Century

The Toyota Century is a car many people have probably never heard of. It’s the Japanese company’s most luxurious model, even more sophisticated than any Lexus, and it compares to most other luxury sedans from Germany, Britain and America. It’s a car that’s the opposite of every other Toyota model on the market – built with no expense spared.

The Century is a unique car, with the second generation being the first, and so far only, V12-powered Japanese production car ever made. The latest generation ditched the V12 in favor of a 5.0-litre hybrid V8, which produces 425bhp, mated to an eCVT with power going to the rear wheels only. The second generation Century was the only model sold outside of Japan. However, the current model is only available at select dealerships in Japan.

7 Would not dare to modify – Honda S800

The Honda S800 was the precursor to the legendary S2000 and was produced between 1966 and 1970. As the name suggests, it was a small sports car with a 0.8 liter engine, producing around 70 hp. The party trick of the S800 was that it could spin up to 10,000 rpm – back in 1967! The S800 was Honda’s first car capable of going 100 mph, while returning an impressive 35 MPG.

When the car went on sale in Britain in 1967, Honda had redesigned the car with normal transmission parts, rather than using chains and motorcycle suspension. The S800 was a success and most importantly, it was cheaper than the Mini Cooper and the Triumph Spitfire. The S800 is a classic car that doesn’t need any modification because it’s already pretty awesome.

6 Would not dare to modify – Mazda Cosmo

The Mazda Cosmo – also called 110S – was one of the first Japanese cars to be powered by a rotary engine. It was fitted with a 982 cc (60 cui) twin-rotor engine developing 110 hp. It was opted for the rotary engine as it produced more power than the equivalent inline engine, but negated the heavier Japanese road tax on engines over 1.0 litres.

The original Cosmo was updated in 1968 to the Series II, which featured a longer wheelbase for improved interior space, retuned suspension and 20 more hp. The front has also been improved for better cooling. The Cosmo Series II also came with a 5-speed manual transmission as opposed to the Series I’s 4-speed. The Cosmo is a unique classic car because it looks like a spaceship and sounds like a race car. Certainly not a car that needs modifications.

5 Would make a great project – Toyota Hilux

The Toyota Hilux is one of the most popular vehicles on the planet. It is renowned for its reliability and durability, being used for everything from luxury transport to agricultural workhorses. The older generation Hilux is a great project car as it offers a host of performance aftermarket parts.

Many owners have even swapped the Hilux engines, replacing them with Lexus V8s. This improved the overall performance of the truck, but also requires some transmission strengthening – easily achievable with aftermarket tuning. The Hilux is a versatile pickup truck that feels just as at home in the city as it does in the great outdoors.

4 Would make a great project – Nissan 300ZX Z32

The Nissan 300ZX is one of Nissan’s best-known sports cars in the JDM world. The 300ZX Z32 available in the United States came with a 3.0-liter V6, either naturally aspirated or twin-turbocharged – the former produced 222 hp and the latter 300 hp.

Like many other JDM cars such as the Toyota Supra Mk4, Mitsubishi 3000GT and Subaru Impreza WRX STI, there are many upgrades available for the 300ZX. Popular upgrades include a sportier body kit, a retuned ECU, bigger turbochargers and a better clutch. The 300ZX is a great sports car and marks one of the coolest eras in the JDM market.

3 Would make a great project – Lexus LS400

The Lexus LS400 was the first model launched by Toyota’s new luxury division. It featured a 4.0 liter V8 engine – one of the most reliable V8s around and undercut the competition in the luxury sedan segment, while offering most of the same features and options.

The LS400 is a great car to buy as a project or for everyday driving. The LS400 launched and cemented Lexus’ incredible customer service and reputation for reliability, which means that when the car is serviced, it won’t let its owner down. It’s also in the old-school luxury segment, definitely holding up better than equivalent German cars.

2 Would make a great project – Honda Accord Coupe

The Honda Accord Coupe might not sound like the most exciting car to customize, but surprisingly, there’s a market for them. The Accord Coupe is a slightly more luxurious version of the normal Accord sedan, but mostly since it comes in a different body configuration.

The Accord Coupe, like most other Japanese cars, has plenty of spare parts available, from new steering wheels with carbon inlay to body kits and forced induction. The Accord Coupé is a very good project car.

1 Would make a great project – Toyota Celica

The Toyota Celica can be considered the smaller and cheaper version of the Supra. The two most popular generations of the Celica were the sixth and seventh. The sixth generation was famous for its racing history – even if Toyota cheated. The seventh generation was completely redesigned and was only available with front-wheel drive and a 1.8-liter engine.

The Celica features excellent aftermarket upgrades, from monstrous rear fenders to forced induction kits like turbochargers and superchargers. Many owners also opt for the rally look with the classic Castrol livery, or they give it a body kit, huge wheels and a striking color change to make it stand out from the crowd. The customization possibilities are endless.

Italian studio Pininfarina has been responsible for designing some of the world’s most desirable cars in a history that stretches back over 90 years. Its longstanding partnerships with brands like Ferrari and Alfa Romeo are perhaps what the studio is best known for, but it has worked with all manner of manufacturers, from Chinese EV startups to American bigs like Cadillac. With such a large and diverse back catalogue, it’s inevitable that some of its best designs will end up being overlooked.

RELATED: 10 Coolest Forgotten Cars Designed By Zagato

As well as designing cars, Pininfarina also has a long history of building for other manufacturers, as well as developing public transport solutions like trains and buses. It seems there isn’t much that Pininfarina hasn’t tried, but that’s the brand classic cars which remain its crowning glory, with icons like the Ferrari F40 and Group B 288 GTO beginning life as sketches in Pininfarina’s workshop. Back on ten other creations of the brand that do not deserve to be forgotten.

ten Cadillac Jacqueline

The partnership between Cadillac and Pininfarina is sadly best known for the ill-fated Cadillac Allanté, but decades before Pininfarina had tried to convince GM bosses to no avail. After being hired as a coachbuilder to manufacture the Eldorado Brougham in 1959, Pininfarina created the Jacqueline concept in an attempt to win a new design contract with GM.

The design blended American proportions with Italian accents in what is undoubtedly a handsome car today, but back then GM bosses were unimpressed. They declined the proposals of the Italian studio and the concept was stored in their factory in Turin, Italy. It was later sold to a private collector and fitted with a V8 and homologated for use in the United States, where it would reside today.

9 Pininfarina Cambiano

While most of Pininfarina’s designs are made in collaboration with other manufacturers, it also produces designs under its own name. One such model was the Cambiano, which debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and caused a storm among attendees.

It featured a 320hp electric powertrain with a range extender, allowing it to hit 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds and top out at 186mph. The car was reportedly considered for production after its positive reception at the show, but for unknown reasons this never happened.

8 Ferrari CR25

Ferrari’s designs in the early 1970s were becoming more conservative, as the takeover by Fiat in 1969 meant less freedom was given to the company’s designers to experiment. However, Ferrari commissioned Pininfarina to create a car that was both aerodynamic and visually exciting, and the result was the CR25.

RELATED: 11 Concept Cars Ferrari Hopes We Forget (& 8 They Should Actually Make)

Its name comes from its drag coefficient of 0.025, a revolutionary figure for a four-seater at the time. The design proved too radical for Ferrari, who opted to stick with the existing 365 GT4, meaning only one CR25 was ever built.

7 Maserati A6 1500 Gran Turismo

Until the advent of World War II, Maserati was a racing-oriented company, with all of its cars primarily built for the track. In 1947, however, a change was needed and the company’s first road car, the A6 1500 Gran Turismo, was born.

It was designed by Pininfarina and started a long tradition of Maserati GT cars, although only 61 examples of this pioneering car were produced. At just 65 bhp, it was considerably less powerful than most of the marque’s previous racing cars, but its styling, handling and interior quality ensured its success and paved the way for today’s Maserati road cars. .

6 Honda Argento Vivo

This killer combination of Japanese engineering and Italian style appeared in 1995 and quickly caught the eye of the Sultan of Brunei, one of the most influential car buyers in the world at the time, purchasing hundreds of cars every year.

He liked the Argento Vivo so much that he is said to have bought several copies for his personal collection, although it is unclear how many. It was, however, never offered for public sale, probably thanks to its state-of-the-art features like a carbon fiber folding roof and an inline-5 engine, which would have been difficult to develop for mass production.

5 Ferrari 330 America

The 330 America was an evolution of Ferrari’s legendary 250 series, featuring a more powerful V12 engine than its predecessors, developing around 300 horsepower. It was designed by Pininfarina for the American market, hence its name.

Only 50 examples were built, and all surviving cars are now in the hands of collectors, rarely seen in public. Despite their popularity with these collectors, 330s do not tend to achieve the same recognition among the wider enthusiast community as the 250 series, despite the fact that, at least mechanically, they are superior cars.

4 Fittipaldi EF7 Vision GT By Pininfarina

Part of the Vision GT series of virtual concepts for the Gran Turismo series of racing games, the Fittipaldi was different from most other concepts, in that it was planned to have a small production run. Founded by racing driver Emerson Fittipaldi, the concept was meant to showcase a preview of an actual hypercar that would have been released a few years after the car was launched in Gran Turismo Sports.

RELATED: 10 Coolest Vision Gran Turismo Cars Yet

Unfortunately, it now seems unlikely that the car will reach production, although the reason is not entirely clear, as a manufacturing facility would have been secured and initial deposits for all 39 units would have been taken. However, Motoring Weekly reported in 2019 that Fittipaldi appeared to have abandoned the project, focusing his attention on unrelated projects.

3 Nash Rambler Palm Beach Coupe

Pininfarina’s designs for the US market are always worth a closer look, as they often display a very different take on the company’s Eurocentric designs. Named after Palm Beach, Florida, the Rambler Palm Beach Coupe was commissioned by Nash as a potential replacement for the Nash-Healey.

It draws a lot of inspiration from the “Jet Age” designs of the time, with two-tone paintwork and prominent rear fins. Only one fully functional car was produced, and ultimately the project fell through, but not before it became a featured exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum and made the cover of Motor Trend magazine in 1957.

2 Ferrari Pinin

Ferrari had been making four-seater cars since the 1960s, but until the Pinin made its debut in 1980, it had never made a four-door car before. Designed by Pininfarina and presented to Ferrari as a possible production car, Enzo Ferrari reportedly considered making a limited series of the Pinin but ultimately decided against it.

With a 4.9-litre flat-12 engine and a luxurious interior, the car was a direct competitor to the Rolls-Royces of the time, and it was this competition that would have doomed the project to failure. Ferrari was concerned that its production quality could not match that of the British, so the project was eventually scrapped.

1 BMW Lusso Gran Coupe

Sometimes it happens that a manufacturer launches a new car as a concept, and then when the production version arrives, it doesn’t quite live up to that original concept. The Lusso Gran Coupe was unveiled in 2013 as a potential preview of the next 8 Series, sporting a twin-turbo V12 and refined styling that doesn’t feature an obnoxiously large kidney grille (take note, modern BMW).

Although it generated a lot of hype at the time, it would take another five years for the production 8 Series to arrive, by which time it had lost its V12 engine and Pininfarina styling. It might not have been the biggest seller by volume, but if Bimmer had released a production version of the Lusso Gran Coupe, it would surely have been one of the most desirable cars of its time.

The function of your vehicle’s “air recirculation button”

(KODE) – It’s a button that almost everyone has at least glanced at on their vehicle’s climate control dashboard, but do you know its purpose?

The “air recirculation button” has two functions; mainly dealing with the vehicle’s air conditioning system.

On most cars, trucks, and SUVs, the recirculation air button is easily identifiable, with its symbol depicting a semicircle inside the outline of a vehicle.

Many people say they know the button, but don’t know when it should be on or off.

The air conditioning features on the center dash of a 2018 Ford Escape include the air recirculation button.

According to Tabitha Ruhl, director of Joplin Transmission and Auto Center, pressing that single button on your vehicle’s dashboard climate control will cut outside air to the car’s interior, thereby “recirculating” air inside. inside your vehicle.

This ensures that you are recirculating conditioned air rather than hot air from outside.

Now that summer is right around the corner, Ruhl says the recirculation air button is great for turning up your air conditioning to help your vehicle’s cabin get as cool as possible, quickly.

Another function of this air conditioning system is to prevent pollution and exhaust gases from entering the vehicle.

Activating this button will also help significantly reduce pollen while driving, which is a great benefit if you suffer from outdoor allergens.

In the video below, Ruhl summarizes your vehicle’s recirculation air button, including how using it could save you money on gas.

“The button works by helping your car recirculate cool air from your air conditioner from the moment you turn it on. If you choose not to use the button, your car will have to draw in air from outside and work twice as hard to cool that air as the already cooled air around you,” Ruhl said.

Since the recirculation air button goes hand in hand with a vehicle’s air conditioning system, you’ll probably want to use it when the outside temperature is above 75 degrees (Fahrenheit).

VIDEO: summary of the air recirculation button and its functions

“If you don’t turn on the air recirculation button, your car’s air conditioning will constantly cool the hot air from outside your vehicle and have to work much harder, putting more strain on the fan and compressor. of air,” Ruhl said. .

Another benefit of using the recirculated air feature is the money you could save on gas.

“Cars are generally more fuel efficient when the air conditioner is set to recirculate interior air. This is because maintaining the same cool air requires less energy than constantly cooling hot air from outside,” Ruhl said.

While the recirculation button is great for the summer months, it may be best avoided in the winter or when your windows fog up.

“Whenever you use defrost, it’s best not to activate this button. Also, using it while your heater is on won’t do anything to your vehicle,” Ruhl said.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Cordoba man has been accused of buying more than $140,000 worth of cars under someone else’s name.

According to police, Marqueze Blackwell went to a few dealerships and bought three cars using a fake ID.

In July 2021, Blackwell purchased a 2017 Infiniti QX60 for $29,977. The following month, he bought a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas for $51,275.

In October, he bought a 2022 Kia Stinger for $61,914.

In all of those purchases, police say Blackwell used a fake Mississippi driver’s license with her picture on it. According to court documents, false documents were submitted indicating that Blackwell was a director of TruGreen and earned $5,000 a month.

Eventually someone figured out and realized that Blackwell was not who he claimed to be.

The employees called the police reporting that the three cars had been stolen.

Southaven Police arrested Blackwell after he was caught driving one. He was taken to the Shelby County Jail on Thursday.

Blackwell is due in court on Friday for identity theft, forgery and theft of property.

An Atlanta woman is frustrated after finding a gun in her rental car. She said the company and the police were slow to deal with it.

“As a child, I was always told that if you see a gun that isn’t yours, report it,” Marianna Macleod said emphatically.

She said she was stunned when she found a gun in the glove compartment of her Avis rental car on Sunday.

She wanted to remove the gun from her possession, so she immediately called Avis.

“I opened my glove compartment to look for something and discovered a gun in my car. I was not expecting this at all, so I panicked and called Avis,” said she declared.

Macleod said after a three-hour wait, Avis gave him the ride.

“Avis has law enforcement and they transferred me there and then they transferred me to roadside assistance. But they said we couldn’t do anything because we’re only ‘a towing company,’ the Kirkwood resident said.

Macleod said Avis told her to call the Atlanta Police Department and she was surprised at what an officer said.

“‘You’re allowed to have a gun in Georgia, so it’s OK to have it in the glove compartment.’ I said, ‘But that’s not my weapon.’ He said, “Did you call Avis? I said, ‘Yeah, they told me to call you guys.’ Who’s to blame? It’s not my gun and it’s been over 24 hours now,” she said.

Macleod said she was determined to return the gun and the car despite all the roadblocks.

“I want gun safety. It’s a gun that’s not mine. In a car that’s not mine. I don’t want it to fall into the wrong hands,” said Macleod.

The Kirkwood resident said an Avis official finally called her back on Tuesday afternoon.

“He’s going to pay me back. But I’m not entirely sure that will happen. I just don’t think they handled it very responsibly,” the young woman said.

FOX 5 reached Avis and the Atlanta Police Department. Avis has not commented yet. Atlanta police said residents should call 911 if they find a weapon. That is exactly what Ms. Macleod did.
