The Shubert Foundation has awarded a record $37.6 million in unrestricted grants to nonprofit theaters, dance companies, university theater training programs, and related service agencies, and has additionally made two donations of $1 million to create scholarships for theater students at Spelman College and Morehouse College, two of the largest HBCUs (historically black colleges and universities).

The grants and donations were announced by the Foundation today. The figure of $37.6 million surpasses last year’s record of $32.1 million by $5.5 million.

“We are thrilled to increase both our funding and the number of our grantees this year,” Diana Phillips, president of the Shubert Foundation, said in a statement. “While it has been exciting to see life return to the performing arts, Covid has dealt a terrible blow and there remains a huge need everywhere.”

Established in 1945 by theater impresarios Lee and JJ Shubert to honor their brother Sam, the Foundation is today the nation’s largest funder of unrestricted assistance to nonprofit theater and dance companies. Since the Foundation’s grant program was established in 1977, the organization has awarded more than $575 million.

According to Phillips, the Foundation sought to broaden access and remove barriers to grants this year, and “welcomed new low-budget applicants without requiring audited financial statements.” She said 18 of the 50 new grant recipients were added to the Foundation’s roster because of this change.

President Robert E. Wankel said the Foundation’s board approved the two $1 million scholarship endowments at Spelman and Morehouse “to further expand opportunities for students of color to gain vast experiences in the performing arts”.

“Spelman College is honored to receive such a generous endowment gift from the Shubert Foundation to support the development of theatrical arts for women of color,” said Mary Schmidt Campbell, President of Spelman College. “As the College expands and renews our theaters and performance spaces, the support of our promising young students is the perfect complement.”

David A. Thomas, President of Morehouse College, said, “Creativity is the most important talent the world will need in the future. This gift will empower men of color to use their unique artistic talents to communicate ideas, overcome cultural barriers, solve problems, and serve as catalysts for motivation, excitement, reflection, and introspection. NEWARK — Sixteen mixed sand volleyball teams will face off Saturday at The Yard in Newark Station, but the winner of the tournament has already been decided.

Proceeds from the Dig It For the House event will benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio, which provided 9,202 nights of rest to 717 Licking County families over a 10-year period.

Last year, the tournament raised $10,000, which provides 100 family nights at Ronald McDonald House. This year’s event has raised $15,000 so far.

The tournament begins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Newark Station, 325 W. Main St. Live music begins at 6:30 p.m. There will also be music, a craft show with 10 vendors, a cornhole, raffles, games and food/drink specials.

Todd Alexander, chairman of owner A4 Ragtime Band Development and Seth Stout’s partner on the Newark Station development, is the former chairman of the board of directors at Central Ohio’s Ronald McDonald House and has served the organization charity for over 20 years.

The Middlesex College Foundation recently received donations from ITServe Alliance and BAPS Charities.

ITServe Alliance

ITServe Alliance, an organization that represents the interests of small and medium-sized IT staffing services, presented a check for $15,000 to the Middlesex College Foundation and College President Mark McCormick during his meeting in May, according to Thomas Peterson, marketing and communications at Middlesex College.

The program also included a speech by U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ).

Three member companies of the Alliance – FinacleSoft Inc., HallMark Global Technologies Inc. and NAM Info Inc. – have each funded scholarships of $5,000. Each scholarship will be awarded to one student each year with $2,500 paid in the fall semester and $2,500 in the spring.

The first three scholarships will be awarded in the fall of 2022.

A walk/run organized by BAPS Charities raised $5,000 for the Middlesex College Foundation on June 5. The walk also raised funds for the JFK University Medical Center and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The event, titled “In the Joy of Others”, is part of an international effort by BAPS to raise funds for their local communities.

Joy. It is the overwhelming response of Ugandan villagers to the blessings that have been brought to them through the generosity of Imperial Valley donors and their support of Burning Bush International Uganda.

Based on the scriptures of Matthew, Jim Rhodes and his wife, Nancie, established BBI Uganda in 2012 to bring the gospel and humanitarian relief to Eastern Uganda. Since then, the organization has provided clean water sources and the tools to help people lift themselves out of poverty.

Rhodes was able to visit the country from April 19 to May 7 to see the good works brought about by his ministry. He had been unable to visit the country and BBI partner Eric Sabiit or review projects in person since late 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was greeted by villagers dressed in their brightly colored clothes as they danced, sang and expressed their joy for the blessings they had received and its impact on their lives. It was a particular pleasure, said Rhodes, to be present for the celebrations. Each ceremony lasts two to three hours, usually with several hundred villagers in attendance. “A great moment is always passed by all.”

It is estimated that nearly 8 million people in Uganda live in remote villages without access to safe drinking water and the hardships that come with it. Thanks to the generosity of Imperial Valley residents, a total of 34 wells have been funded, with another 12 added over the past two years.

“Water is the most important thing we can do for these neglected villages,” Rhodes said. “These wells are making a huge difference in the lives of thousands of people in remote villages. Villagers, who in the past had to walk long distances just to fetch dirty water, now have a source of drinking water nearby. (It means) better health, a source of water for themselves and their animals and irrigation for their home gardens, and time saved so children can attend school more regularly. It also brings hope to a village…changes their mindset that has faced illness and death from contaminated water.

When a village receives a nearby clean water source, BBI Uganda’s attention turns to programs that help villagers improve their lives in other ways.

One such program, Goats for Orphans, provides goats to underprivileged children to help lift them out of poverty. Over time, children build up their herds of goats so they can “trade” for cows. In Uganda, goats and cows are highly valued and provide children with resources to fund higher education beyond grade seven. One of the advantages of goats is that they don’t need a special diet, but can simply graze on native plants and bushes in the area. By giving the goats to the children, it is clear that they are for the long term benefit of the children and should not become a source of food.

Rhodes visited several of these villages, meeting the children and admiring their animals. Started more than six years ago, it has become a very successful anti-poverty project, he noted.

BBI Uganda also supports education and training and job creation to help villagers improve their lives and those of their families.

During her recent visit to Uganda, Rhodes met Lucy, a recent graduate of the two-year sewing skills program at Baptist Technical Training School in Kumi. Her training was funded by BBI and a sewing machine was bought for her so she could apply her skills in her village and in the nearby shopping mall.

Rhodes also met Jackson, a recent graduate of the Kumi School, who received his construction training. He is now employed on a major construction project at a nearby high school.

“Both are very grateful for the assistance provided to them by BBI and Eric’s ministry,” Rhodes said. “Now Lucy and Jackson are helping family members pay for school fees and food.”

BBI has also sponsored the university education of talented young people at the Livingstone International University (LIU) in Mbale. This university was founded by Christian churches in the United States about 15 years ago.

For example, Florence graduated from LIU with honors in business management. A mother of a baby boy, she started a retail business, selling baby clothes to families in the Kampala area.

It’s important to point out that when BBI helps “one” person, it actually helps many others, Rhodes said. In Uganda, life is very difficult, so when one person in a family receives income, parents, siblings and other family members benefit.

Additionally, Rhodes met Julius and Frances, BBI scholarship graduates. Last year, they completed the three-year teaching program at LIU. They are now applying their teaching skills in public secondary schools near their home villages and doing very well.

BBI also supports education through the renovation of blackboards in village primary schools. Classroom instruction in Uganda involves teachers writing on blackboards and students copying them into their notebooks, so BBI has focused on improving blackboards in villages that have received well.

Although his trip was short, Rhodes was able to visit the beneficiaries of another program: the micro-loan groups.

“There are many success stories from our microlending groups,” Rhodes said. For example, through her savings group, a woman who runs a small roadside shop was able to get a loan to buy a machine that grinds peanuts to make peanut butter. She also used a loan to expand her pig farming business. Traditional banks wouldn’t work with her, but her savings group is helping her succeed.

Medical support services for the sick and underprivileged have been an outreach focus of BBI since its inception. As resources allow, BBI and Sabiit serve the health needs of indigents who come to Tororo Hospital and Mukuju AIDS Clinic but cannot pay for services. Nutritious meals and medicines are also distributed to patients, and education is provided to help people learn how to stay healthy.

During her visit, Rhodes met two now healthy children, who came to the clinic suffering from severe malnutrition. He also met former patients who recovered from open fractures, skin infections and life-threatening infection due to miscarriage. All are healthy now following the intervention of Sabitt’s ministry, funded by BBI.

In another program, BBI distributed dresses to 100 girls in each of the five villages that received new wells nearly two years ago. The dresses were handmade by many ladies in the Imperial Valley and the girls love them, Rhodes said.

Another important part of BBI Uganda’s ministry is bringing the gospel to inmates. The shadow of Covid-19 continues to cast a cloud over Sabiit’s ability to deal more fully with prisons near Tororo, Uganda. However, Rhodes and his accompanying group were able to attend church services at a small prison in Mayuge, Uganda, with around 100 prisoners. During the service, about fifteen prisoners responded to the call to follow Christ.

Rhodes concluded, “It has been a pleasure to be able to travel to Uganda and see firsthand the impact Burning Bush International and its many donors are having on the lives of people in this impoverished country. He especially enjoyed seeing and participating in the festivities as the people there celebrated the blessings that have enriched their lives and lifted them and their families out of poverty.

“We praise God that so many people in the Imperial Valley support this ministry,” he said.

A total of $121,059 was raised in 2021 for the work of the organization through local contributions, community donations and fundraising efforts.

In just 24 hours, more than 225 local nonprofits worked together across seven northeastern Pennsylvania counties to collectively raise a total of $1,119,661 at the third annual NEPA Gives event on Friday, June 3.

Promoted as the largest day of philanthropy in northeast Pennsylvania, NEPA Gives was organized by the Scranton Area Community Foundation, in partnership with the Alfalfa Foundation, Greater Pike Community Foundation, Wayne County Community Foundation, Carbon County Community Foundation, Posture Interactive, and other community sponsors, to raise awareness of the essential work nonprofits are doing in the area and to help charities raise much-needed funds.

To add to the excitement, the Scranton Area Community Foundation also hosted a free, in-person “Give Gathering” held outside the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center to coincide with Scranton’s First Friday. The Give Gathering included live entertainment from local cover band Light Weight, giveaways, real-time, live updates on NEPA Gives, and opportunities for supporters to meet dozens of participating nonprofits. .

Over 5,149 donors have generously supported NEPA Gives, along with numerous sponsors including Coterra, Hawk Family Foundation, Moses Taylor Foundation, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Neighborly, Discover NEPA, Cumulus Media, Shamrock Communications, Schwartz Mack Foundation, Fidelity Bank, Women in Philanthropy, NEPA Animal Welfare Collaborative, William G. The UK’s biggest charitable foundations have made “strong progress” in their efforts to tackle the climate crisis, according to a study.

The information is included in the second annual update of the Donor Engagement on Climate Change, which was launched in November 2019.

Ninety-one foundations, including the Wolfson Foundation, Power to Change and Carnegie UK, have subscribed to the commitments and pledged to take actions such as devoting more resources to climate change work and managing their investments “for a post-carbon future.”

According to the report, the number of foundations that said they were “making progress” in their investment strategy more than doubled from 14 to 31 in the past year, while the number saying the same about of reducing their own carbon footprint went from 18 to 40.

The growing focus on investment comes after a High Court judgment last month which will give charities greater freedom to pursue social outcomes rather than financial returns.

The foundations have made “significant progress over the past year,” says the ACF document.

Joanna Pienkowska, Senior Policy and Engagement Officer at ACF, said: “We have always said that climate change is an issue for all foundations and funders.

“Given the extent of its impacts, it is a health issue, a gender equality issue, a racial and social justice issue, an intergenerational issue, an economic issue and an issue for local communities. ”

Foundations were using the pledge “as a framework to develop their own thinking and actions on climate change,” she said.
