Earlier this year, Mark Griffin, a former CHV City Council member, announced the formation of the Cherry Hills Village Police Foundation. It is a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt charity that is fully independent from the CHV municipal government. Its objective is to provide “vital resources and essential support to the CHV police department”.

Griffin said, “When I was on the CHV city council, I was the liaison with the police department and I rode with them regularly. I saw with my own eyes what they go through, especially at night. I got a lot of help from the people at the Greenwood Village Police Foundation to organize and start our foundation. When the crisis in Afghanistan began following the US military withdrawal announced in April and ended on August 30, Sara Yim knew she wanted to help her Afghan friends and their families get to safety in the city. outside the country. As a result, Yim created a women-led nonprofit called Transit Initiatives, which helps at-risk and vulnerable Afghan citizens immediately evacuate the country and move to safer places.

Yim previously worked at the United States Agency for International Development in the Office of Transition Initiatives before joining the Masters program in Social Entrepreneurship at the Marshall School of Business. Yim said she hoped for a career pivot when she arrived at USC; However, when his former employees and friends asked for help in getting to safety, Yim offered to help.

Many relief organizations, including Yim’s, took a digital humanitarian approach when responding to the crisis in August.

“I’ve never seen anything like it, by the way, it’s a whole other amazing beautiful story about how we all react like this with such a digital response,” Yim said.

Yim first volunteered his time to take his friends and their families on planes from Kabul or by land to Pakistan. For Yim, getting Afghans through the gates of Hamid Karzai International Airport was one of the most horrific experiences of his life, as many friends and former colleagues called for their Afghan families to be added to the manifesto. the charter from Kabul.

Yim said she and her colleagues feel a duty to continue to defend the security and resettlement of Afghan military and civilian partners. Currently, Transit Initiatives has six core members and an extensive volunteer network consisting primarily of former and current government officials, civilian and military partners, and USC students.

Over the summer, Yim worked as a fellow at the Viterbi School of Engineering for a digital health startup called Frontida Records, co-founded by former student Laura Roed. Frontida Records was formed after her team volunteered at Camp Moria in Greece – Europe’s largest refugee camp before it burned down in September 2020. After her scholarship, Yim kept in touch with Frontida Records, and its members helped her create a database for transit. Initiatives and volunteers with Transit Initiatives including Roed.

“I wanted to help with the situation of the people having to evacuate from Afghanistan and the crisis there was pretty horrific to watch. Another USC affiliate organization that works with Transit Initiatives is the Los Angeles Blockchain Lab, a partner of the Viterbi School of Engineering. Heidi Pease, CEO and co-founder of the organization, was introduced to Transit Initiatives through a member of the team at Her Code, an initiative within the lab that helps disadvantaged women and youth to accessing blockchain, a system for recording information in a system that is difficult to modify, hack or cheat and is used in cryptocurrency.

Her code worked with two STEM schools for young women in Afghanistan to provide greater accessibility to blockchain training for students. However, when the US military left Afghanistan, teachers contacted Her Code and said they were nervous due to the high-risk nature of the girls-only schools, which were targeted by the Taliban. The Her Code team agreed to help the teachers get to safety and worked with the Transit Initiatives team.

Since her organization is new to fundraising, Yim said she seeks support from professional fundraisers and grant writers, as well as connections with foundations and charities.

Although many are interested in donating, the organization faces issues with donors who fear the credibility of funds in the country. However, according to the US Department of the Treasury, support in the country, like transit initiatives, is covered by the US government’s waiver of Taliban government sanctions. If donors choose to support organizations in the country, they should support organizations led by “humanitarian professionals” who have experience working in conflict zones, Yim said.

Reflecting on her time as a U.S. government official, Yim thinks her experience at Transit Initiatives is one of the most important jobs she has been involved in.

The announcement came late last month as donors pledged billions for conservation and other climate efforts in tandem with the United Nations General Assembly. Millions more were pledged last week ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, later this month.

Foundations are required to list the contributions they make on a Form 990 that they file with the IRS each year. But where Waverley Street, formerly known as the Emerson Collective Foundation, has directed most of its donations so far remains a mystery.

Between 2017 and 2019, the foundation contributed $ 185 million to a donor-advised fund, which is comparable to a charitable investment account. Donor Advised Funds, or DAF for short, allow donor anonymity – something Powell Jobs has long valued in his work. The foundation’s 990 for 2019, the last year with publicly available information, lists its only direct donation as a $ 50,000 donation to a California-based environmental nonprofit. It is not known where the other millions ended up, or even if they came out the door.

Critics have called for reforms to the DAF because accounts are not required to donate to charity in any given year, but allow donors to benefit from immediate tax deductions. (The Silicon Valley Community Foundation, the DAF sponsor where Powell Jobs parked his contributions, says that if a donor has not recommended any grants after two years of donating, they will distribute the contributions through their own community fund.)

A spokesperson for Emerson Collective confirmed to The Associated Press that Waverley Street, which had $ 1.8 billion in assets in 2019, will end its work after 10 years. However, the spokesperson declined to say whether the foundation would continue to put its money into a DAF, which could allow it to retain advisory privileges on its contributions well after 10 years. It is legal for private foundations to donate to CFOs in order to meet their required minimum annual payment rate of 5%. The Ford Foundation, which recently elected Powell Jobs as a member of its board of directors, has supported similar DAF reform proposals.

Ray Madoff, a Boston College law professor who pushed Congress to act on the reforms, says the problem with CFOs goes far beyond Powell Jobs – the foundations of Google co-founder Larry Page and Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, for example, made such donations. in the past.

Emerson made headlines this month for his earlier investments in entities like Ozy Media – which recently closed after articles in the New York Times raised questions about his claims from millions of viewers and readers. . The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative now publicly lists its grants, but Emerson Collective does not. However, some outside observers believe that Powell Jobs’ quest for anonymity could be beneficial in his climate-focused work.

“In general, I always try to advise donors to be open and transparent about what they are trying to do and how they are trying to do it, but there are times when that may not make sense,” said Phil Buchanan, president of the Center for Effective Philanthropy.

Toast to Hope brings together local businesses and residents who have helped CCS.

The organization was originally founded to provide marriage counseling only, but over the years has grown into something even better. CCS Executive Director Evita Mendez Counts explained some of the different services offered by the organization.

“You know we serve vulnerable people including the elderly, victims of domestic violence, people who need mental health services, so we do different things here in the community,” Counts said.

In addition to dinner and live music, an auction was also held at the event where guests could bid for different items.
Ranging from things like gift baskets, jewelry and even autographed basketball jerseys.

Eventually, tickets for the event sold out, as more than 255 were sold. For Counts, she was happy to see that the community came to support their cause.
