In 2020, 9,756 new cars were sold.

Of this amount, 6,702 were classified as passenger vehicles for private use, while 3,054 were for commercial use.

The most purchased vehicle was the 2,072-unit Kia Sportage.

Conversely, the least purchased was the two-door coupe, with only eight.

For commercial use, the most popular vehicle was a 1,307-unit 4×4 pickup.

New vehicle sales in 2020 were 27% lower than in 2019, when the figure was 13,420.

According to the president of the Association of Car Dealers of Trinidad and Tobago (ADATT), Ryan Latchu, who is also president of Toyota T&T, new car sales stagnated from January to September 2021 compared to the 2020 equivalent. .

“We basically sold 50 units less this year than the same time last year. And we’ve been locked up for two months this year and two months last year, so we’re going to call it flat, ”he said.

“For the remainder of 2021, the outlook is similar for 2020,” he said.

He observed that new car dealers face many challenges.

The first is change.

“Since 2015 we have been facing forex and the government has focused on other industries as opposed to the auto industry,” he said.

This was picked up by Southern Sales CEO Imtiaz Ahamad and Massy Motors senior vice president Jean-Pierre Du Coudray.

However, Du Coudray said that since Massy earns currencies from his other subsidiaries, he is not always at the mercy of the banks’ tight currency situation.

The impact of Covid-19 has been profound for the industry as it affected assembly in Asia and created a shortage of semiconductor chips needed for new vehicles.

“It has hampered production and it means less sales,” said Du Coudray.

Then there are the transportation costs.

He observed that so far freight costs have had minimal impact on the cost of cars, but said it was still too early to say what the end result would be next year.

And finally, he said, the economic landscape continues to be difficult for businesses.

Latchu said a metric used by ADATT for projected sales is typically energy prices.

“When oil and gas prices are high, we usually find that we sell more vehicles,” he said.

Ahamad said that due to delays from Covid-19, there is now a waiting list for customers due to solid-state chip issues as well as freight.

He said Covid-19 had had an impact on assembly lines and that although trade was picking up, it was more difficult to meet demand.

“In this regard, the auto industry has been hit the hardest,” he said.

Towards electric

On October 4, in his presentation of the 2022 budget, the Minister of Finance Colm Imbert declared in accordance with the government’s commitment to promote a green economy and reduce the country’s carbon footprint: “I propose to remove all rights of customs, motor vehicle tax and value added tax. on the import of battery-powered electric vehicles with an age limit for imported used battery-powered electric vehicles of two years. This measure will take effect on January 1, 2022 and will be reviewed after two years. “

While the local auto industry is widely receptive because of the positive impacts such policy decisions will have on the world due to climate change, it remains skeptical of public buy-in as it would also mean a cultural shift for the country. .

This cultural change is twofold: an understanding of the environmental impact of fuels and the fact of having to recharge cars at stations rather than refueling at the pump.

At present, there is already a company that brings in electric vehicles.

It’s Lifestyle Motors’ luxury brand, Porsche Taycan, which sells for over a million dollars.

So far, six have been sold in T&T.

Latchu said there are brands in the market that offer electric products, like Hyundai’s Kona (soon to be commercially available in T&T) and Massy recently introduced an MG brand, which also offers an electric option.

“I think over the next five years we’ll have 15 brands of hybrids on the market,” he said.

He observed that this will be dictated by the political orientation of the brands that are distributed here.

On the issue of hybrids, Ahamad said it will take work.

“It’s not a quick decision. You might want to do this, but then you have dealerships talking to the manufacturers and the process tends to be a bit long. So you won’t immediately see success or change. But the government’s policy is good for the country, ”he said.

But try the hybrid first

According to Du Coudray, the government should have let the market flirt with hybrids before moving strictly to electric vehicles.

While he praised the overarching goal of electric vehicles, which would bode well for the environment, he noted that the market is only now entering hybrids.

Massy sells the Hyundai Ioniq which is available in electric and hybrid versions.

Latchu said that between January and September 2020, 333 hybrid units were sold, but for the same period in 2021, it was only 47 due to the removal of tax and customs breaks for the under-18 category. 1600 cc.

Du Coudray said the removal of the tax and duty had hurt the market.

In his presentation of the 2021 budget in October 2020, Imbert said tax breaks would be removed on the import of private vehicles from the end of this month.

“At nearly a million vehicles, there are just too many cars on the roads in Trinidad and Tobago today. As a country, we spend $ 2.5 billion a year or $ 400 million. US dollars per year to import an average of 25,000 vehicles per year, of which at least two-thirds are for passenger cars.

“This created a serious currency leak. We are proposing to remove all tax benefits for importing passenger cars. All passenger cars will now be subject to customs duties, motor vehicle tax and value added tax (VAT), with the lowest rates of duties and taxes being imposed on hybrid cars, electric cars, CNG cars and small engine cars under 1500 CC to encourage low usage. . “

However, tax breaks would remain in place for commercial and industrial vehicles and on public transport vehicles.

Du Coudray told Express Business that the hybrid market evaporated when it accounted for 5% of Massy’s total sales.

“We would sell 30-35 a month, but when you have a 30% price increase, it’s down to about two because once that price goes up you have a lot of other options for the consumer,” he said. he declares. On electric vehicles, he observed, the average customer will not want to go in one step right away because it is a cultural change and the infrastructure has to be built.

“That’s why hybrids make sense, because customers have the ability to feel it and be more comfortable when they want to take the leap. It’s a transition from normal to electric overnight, ”he said.

He observed that Barbados had competently built its electric vehicle infrastructure, but T&T was starting now.

“Not everyone will have a home charger, so you will have enough places to charge yourself,” he said.

But once it’s doable and there is demand, Massy will bring them in, he said.

On the cost side, for Du Coudray, economies of scale must also be taken into account: bringing in five is more expensive than 500 units.

He said Massy was hit short term by freight issues.

“At this point, it is too early to say what the impact will be on the cost of cars. Over the months, we have no choice but to pass this cost on to the consumer, ”he said.

Born in Rhineland, Germany on November 20, 1880, Eugene Daniel Rubel was an infant when his parents moved to Rockford, Illinois. Life turned out to be tough for the boy as he was only 9 years old when his father passed away. Her mother died a week later.

Still, the boy was able to do well in Rockford Public Schools and then traveled to the Midwest for five years as a salesperson for a farm tool company.

In 1906 Rubel came to the valley to work for Western Union Oil Co. in Bicknell, and remained there until 1914 when he came to Santa Maria to open Crescent Garage on the corner of West Cypress Street and South Broadway.

He married Nellie Elizabeth Voigt in San Luis Obispo on December 11, 1910.

In 1921, he purchased the Jones property at 304 S. Broadway (southeast corner of Broadway and Cypress Street) and built a two-story structure to house a car dealership. The building was constructed by pioneer Doane Building Co. for $ 110,000. Oscar Doane, with only an eighth grade education, is credited with designing the building.

With Rubel Motor Co. being the sole distributor of Dodge Motor cars in northern Santa Barbara County, San Luis Obispo County and the southern half of Monterey County, his business was successful from the start.

His friend, Frank Roemer, used the southern half of the building for a Buick dealership, while the second floor was used for automobile storage and professional offices occupied by the US Forestry Department, Dr. Ralph Bardin, Dr. George C. Bell and Dr. W. Leland Smith.

Rubel was mayor of Santa Maria from 1920 to 1924, when he retired from politics in order to devote more time to his business and conservation activities.

Always interested in service to his neighbor, Rubel was a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts, Hi-Y, Camp Fire and was a member of the Knights of Pythias and a life member of the Order of Elks of San Luis Obispo. He was one of the organizers of the Santa Barbara County Fish and Game Protective Association, was one of the founders of the Santa Maria Club, and was president of the Kiwanis Club during the construction of the Santa Maria Plunge.

Rubel died suddenly at his home on May 18, 1934. His wife, Nellie, died in September 1949. Both are buried in the cemetery of Santa Maria.

Shirley Contreras lives in Orcutt and writes for the Santa Maria Valley Historical Society. She can be contacted at 623-8193 or shirleycontreras2@yahoo.com. Her book, “The Good Years,” a selection of stories she has written for the Santa Maria Times since 1991, is on sale at the Santa Maria Valley Historical Society, 616 S. Broadway.

Rocky Mountain Motor Cars (+ 1-801-785-1058) has announced a new update to its line of low mileage used vehicles. Based in Pleasant Grove, Utah, the company offers a variety of “buy here, pay here” (BHPH) arrangements.

The goal of the car dealership is to provide customers with quality vehicles at an affordable price. The latest update ensures that families and individual buyers can find a suitable option.

More information can be found at https://www.rockymountainmotorcars.com

The move makes quality used cars more affordable, giving local drivers increased flexibility and more options for a vehicle upgrade. Customers can find used SUVs, vans and trucks to suit all needs and budgets.

Choosing a trusted used car dealer ensures that buyers get a reliable vehicle that has passed rigorous inspections and quality checks. Buying from an individual may be less secure and may lead to problems in the future.

The updated service places particular emphasis on matching bad credit customers with the right car for their individual circumstances. The team understand how difficult it can be to find a suitable vehicle at an affordable price, which is why they are working to streamline the process for buyers.

Rocky Mountain Motor Cars’ BHPH program uses revenue verification to support the sale of the vehicle. This simplifies the buying process, reducing barriers to entry for customers.

Customers highly rate the dealership for their parts, accessories, service and overall experience. They regularly cite honesty of staff and dedication to customer service in their reviews as reasons to repeat purchases.

Rocky Mountain Motor Cars has convenient locations in Ogden and Pleasant Grove. The dealership takes pride in helping drivers get a new vehicle the same day, rather than having to wait.

Further details are provided on https://www.rockymountainmotorcars.com/applications

Besides affordable deals on used cars, the auto store also offers reliable repairs and maintenance. Interested parties can schedule a service using its online booking platform.

A black transgender actor who was an actor in the “Hamilton” touring show filed a federal complaint against the production alleging it lost its role after requesting a gender-neutral dressing room.

Suni Reid, who uses the pronouns them / them and is non-binary, filed a complaint Wednesday with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Los Angeles alleging discrimination and reprisal because, she says , she “dared to question the supposed” awakening “of the company” behind “Hamilton,” the acclaimed musical about Alexander Hamilton and other American historical figures, which is famous for its diverse cast.

One of Reid’s attorneys, Lawrence Pearson, said in a statement to USA TODAY that “Hamilton” has been a public “beacon of diversity” with a commitment to social justice and harmony.

“Behind the curtain, however, the management of the company will force a black and transgender actor simply because he stood up for himself and advocated for a more equitable workplace, and therefore questioned that public image,” Pearson said in the statement.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast of ‘Hamilton’ on stage during the 70th Tony Awards at the Beacon Theater on June 12, 2016 in New York City.

Shane Marshall Brown, spokesperson for “Hamilton”, told USA TODAY in a statement that Reid was “a valued actor” for more than three years, and has denied the charges against him.

“We offered them a contract to return to ‘Hamilton’ on terms suited to their demands,” Brown’s statement read. “We deny the allegations in the (complaint). We have not discriminated against or retaliated against Suni. Since the closure, our organization has taken care of our community. We have treated Suni with the same respect and the same consideration that all members of the company of ‘Hamilton.’

The statement continued, “Specifically, we provided direct financial support to Suni, paid for their health insurance and paid for their housing. We wish Suni good luck in their future endeavors.

In an email to USA TODAY, Pearson said Reid would likely bring federal lawsuit soon to seek “unspecified economic damages for financial harm and emotional distress,” if the EEOC gives the green light.

He said his client wanted the “Hamilton” company “to be held accountable” and to handle cast members’ complaints “with more respect and a less confrontational approach going forward.” The complaint does not specify what responsibility Reid is looking for.

“We look forward to standing up for the rights of Mx. Reid and hope this will be a wake-up call to the theater industry about the systemic inequalities that persist even at its highest level,” said Pearson.

Besides being a smash hit on Broadway, “Hamilton” has won multiple Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize; a filmed version of the musical appeared on Disney + last year. It was created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, of Puerto Rican descent, and bring in black, Latino and Asian actors to tell the story from the founders of the United States through the standards of hip-hop, R&B, jazz and Broadway.

Reid’s attorney said the actor joined the show’s cast right out of college in 2017 and played a variety of ensemble and leading roles in productions in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. , notably George Washington, Aaron Burr, Hercules Mulligan / James Madison, and Marquis de Lafayette / Thomas Jefferson.

But Reid says the company refused to renew their contract after Reid demanded that performers have a gender-neutral dressing room in addition to those for men and women.

Unfortunately, during Mx. Reid’s years with the show, which claims to be a

icon of diversity, they have experienced frequent incidents of discrimination and harassment from ‘Hamilton’ cast and management members because of their race, sexual orientation / LGBTQ + status, gender and gender identity ” , claims Reid’s complaint.

Reid also alleges that the company “did not act when certain actors have physically or intentionally threatened and repeatedly mis-sexist” Reid, who has openly stated that he is transgender and not binary. Reid’s complaint alleges that the “harassment” primarily occurred in the locker rooms of male performers Reid had to use as a cast member in New York and Chicago.

Reid took to social media “more than once” to draw attention to what she saw as racial equity issues, including the predominance of white executives in senior management and the safety of transgender actors. .

In May and June, amid negotiations to renew Reid’s contract, according to the complaint, the company said it would tie up part of the main locker room with a curtain or sheet. When Reid responded that it was not good enough in practical terms or under the law, she alleges that management began to look for ways to get rid of Reid and suspended contract negotiations.

Hamilton management has openly shown its animosity against Mx. Reid by citing ‘problematic’ social media posts as the supposed reason for the heist, despite the fact that these posts … had been known to the company for months before. Mx. Reid’s contract. Discussions resumed, “the complaint claims.

Company’s alleged labeling of Reid as “problematic” perpetuates damaging stereotypes, claims complaint, and betrays company alleged retaliation against Reid “for daring to question social fairness of “Hamilton” in good faith “and to denounce the ill-treatment, says the complaint.

The target of the complaint, as well as any subsequent lawsuits, is Adventureland LLC, which handles contract negotiations and other corporate administrative matters for the Eliza tour of “Hamilton the Musical”.

A new all-electric SUV based on the Mercedes EQE is on the way. Read on for everything we know about it so far.

  • The Mercedes EQE 2023 SUV spotted
  • Sits between EQS and EQC in the line-up
  • Hyper-screen infotainment to include
  • 90kWh battery expected
  • Range approximately 380 miles
  • EQE 350 with 292 hp and 530 Nm at launch
  • Upcoming dual-engine, all-wheel-drive cars
  • AMG versions on the cards
  • Price around £ 70,000 expected

Beneath all this camouflage is the next Mercedes EQE SUV, which should arrive at the end of 2022.

This Tesla Model X alternative will be based on the recently revealed EQE sedan, similar to the EQS lineup.

Mercedes EQE 2023 SUV design

Not that you can see a huge amount through the camouflage, but the blobby profile of the Mercedes EQE SUV is pretty clear to see – similar to the EQC and EQS in this regard.

Up front, you’ll also notice slim headlights and a huge, hidden grille with a hidden Mercedes hiding inside.

Streaked brake lights are also visible at the rear, and massive alloy rims apparently designed with aerodynamic efficiency in mind also appear on this prototype.

Mercedes EQE 2023 SUV interior and infotainment

You can expect the interior of the Mercedes EQE SUV to be more or less the same as the sedan, but with more space.

Expect an almost identical interior to the EQE lounge (pictured), but with more space

That will mean a plethora of more dotted materials, along with luxe knickknacks like customizable ambient lighting and a panoramic glass roof.

It will seat five, and likely with space closer to a GLS SUV than a GLE thanks to a flat floor due to the use of batteries rather than oily mechanical parts.

This is the optional Hyperscreen infotainment setup of the EQE sedan, which should also find its way to the SUV.

You’ll have the option of Mercedes’ “Hyperscreen” infotainment, which sees the entire dashboard transformed into a single giant screen.

Mercedes EQE 2023 SUV batteries and autonomy

A 90 kWh will be present in the Mercedes EQE SUV, just like in the sedan. In the smaller car, it will come back 410 miles from a charge – but expect that to drop below 400 for the SUV due to its greater mass. Somewhere around 380 miles seems a safe bet.

It should also support a 170kW fast charge, adding 155 miles of charge in about 15 minutes.

Performances of the Mercedes EQE 2023 SUV

Expect the Mercedes EQE SUV to have the same launch model as the sedan. This is the EQE 350, which sees a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle, producing 292 hp and 350 Nm of torque.

More powerful dual-motor AWD versions are expected to arrive later. Mercedes has registered trademarks for EQE 43, 53, 55 and 63 which could also apply to high performance AMG versions.

Mercedes EQE 2023 SUV price and release date

Expect the Mercedes EQE to be revealed in mid-2022 and go on sale towards the end of the year.

The price could start around £ 70,000 and increase significantly for eventual twin-engine cars.

The 2021 Golden Vines Diversity Scholarships have been awarded to Angela Elizabeth Scott from USA and Dr Erna Blancquaert from South Africa.

The two prizes, worth £ 55,000 each, were presented last Thursday (October 7) alongside the 2021 Golden Vines Award winners at a ceremony and dinner hosted at Annabel’s Private Members Club .

There were 42 aspiring black and ethnic minority students from 23 countries wishing to undertake the Masters of Wine (MW) and Master Sommelier (MS) programs, each applying for both scholarships.

The scholarships cover the cost of courses and exams, as well as the loss of income during their corporate internships, run by the nonprofit Liquid Icons, with some of the best wineries in the world.

Angela Elizabeth Scott, originally a human rights lawyer for a nonprofit, decided to leave the legal world to move to Napa and work in the wine industry while studying for the degree of the Wine & Spirits Education Trust.

After working as a tasting coordinator for Karen MacNeil, author of The Wine Bible, and working for Spottswoode Winery as a hospitality manager, she moved to Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand.

“Receiving the Golden Vines Diversity Fellowships, Internships and Mentoring Program means that I will be able to connect with key figures and gain experience that I would otherwise not have access to. I hope to help others do the same, ”Scott said.

Jancis Robinson MW, on behalf of the jury, said: “The wine world is incredibly lucky to have Angela Scott. Ex-human rights lawyer, ex-tasting coordinator for Karen McNeil, current Master of Wine student who sold her house to pay for the MW course.

The other laureate, Dr Erna Blancquaert is a professor and viticulture researcher at the Department of Viticulture and Oenology and at the South African Grape & Wine Research Institute at the University of Stellenbosch. She was the first BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) woman to earn a doctorate in viticulture on the African continent.

“I am honored and humbled. This Golden Vines Diversity scholarship will allow me to deepen my knowledge of the entire wine value chain, to implement it in my teaching and to tackle global wine issues through my research, ”said Blancquaert.

Robinson said: “As for Erna Blancquaert, she could be a source of inspiration to over fifty million South Africans as the first color wine scholar. His achievements are already dazzling, and this in a part of the world where it can be extremely difficult to get acquainted with the rest of the world of wine. She is a natural leader and a freak for the truth. I wish him every success.

Adrian Bridge, CEO of Taylor’s Port, the scholarship sponsor said: “As a company we have always worked closely with Gérard Basset and were involved in his first Hotel Du Vin in Winchester. Gérard was a big supporter of the wine industry and education, so it is an honor for us to be associated with his name and with this very important award ”.

The winners of the Golden Vines® Awards 2021 each received a trophy in a box made by Tonnellerie Cavin.

Organized by Liquid Icons, the Golden Vines Awards recognize “stars of the fine wine industry”, as well as fundraising for the Gérard Basset Foundation.

The association, which was founded by the family and colleagues of the late Gérard Basset OBE MW MS, recently revealed that it has broadened its mission statement to include promoting diversity and inclusion in the industry. hotelier.

Guests at the event were treated to a 3-star Michelin 5-course dinner prepared by Chef Mauro Colagreco du Mirazur, sponsored by S. Pellegrino, and a wine list from Dom Perignon P2, Egon Müller, Domaine Baron Thenard, Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Château d’Yquem and limited edition single malt whiskey from The Macallan.

For entertainment, Kylie Minogue, winner of a Special Prize for Wine Entrepreneurship Overnight and producer of the UK’s best-selling rosé wine over the past year, was headlining, with The world famous Kingdom Choir.

The 2021 Golden Vines Awards winners:

– SGC Golden Vines Award for Best Producer of Fine Wines in Europe: Weingut Egon Müller, Moselle Valley, Germany

– The Gucci Golden Vines award for the best producer of fine wines in the Americas: Ridge Vineyards, Santa Cruz Mountains, California, United States

Rolls-Royce to Stop Selling Gasoline Cars | Automatic features https://www.rollsroycefoundation.com/rolls-royce-to-stop-selling-gasoline-cars-automatic-features/ https://www.rollsroycefoundation.com/rolls-royce-to-stop-selling-gasoline-cars-automatic-features/#respond Sun, 10 Oct 2021 04:15:00 +0000 https://www.rollsroycefoundation.com/rolls-royce-to-stop-selling-gasoline-cars-automatic-features/ In nine years, Rolls-Royce will stop selling gasoline vehicles, CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said in a September 29 announcement. In nine years, Rolls-Royce will stop selling gasoline vehicles, CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said in a September 29 announcement. The first of the company’s planned all-electric portfolio, the Specter sedan, will arrive by the fourth quarter of 2023.

“With this new product, we are setting our benchmarks for the full electrification of our entire product portfolio by 2030,” said Müller-Ötvös. “Until then, Rolls-Royce will no longer be in the business of producing or selling internal combustion engine products.”

Müller-Ötvös described the news as the most important decision in the brand’s history since Charles Rolls and Henry Royce agreed they would build cars together on May 4, 1904.

Since its inception, Rolls-Royce has been at the forefront of powerful V12 engine technology and quiet, smooth excellence for the world’s richest and most demanding customers. Many of its most iconic models, from the early Rolls-Royce Phantoms to the modern Cullinan, used the company’s famous 12-cylinder combustion engine technology. As recently as 2019, Müller-Ötvös said he would keep the V12 “as long as possible”.

While Specter will be Rolls-Royce’s first fully formed production electric car, the brand had already experimented with a fully operational fully electric Phantom called 102EX in 2011; a 103EX electric prototype followed in 2016. Rolls-Royce does not currently offer any hybrid vehicles among its fleet which includes the Phantom sedan, Cullinan SUV, Ghost sedan, Wraith coupe and Dawn convertible.

The electric motor was a concept familiar even to the founders of Rolls-Royce: Henry Royce’s first company, named FH Royce and Company, created dynamos, electric crane motors, and bayonet bulbs. In 1900, Charles Rolls drove an electric car named Columbia and declared it “ideal,” according to Rolls-Royce records.

But Royce noted that the electric car would not become mainstream until a charging network was established. Many would say the time has not yet arrived, as BMW vehicles charge through EVgo’s network of just 800 fast chargers nationwide. (Presumably, the Rolls-Royce Specter would charge in a well-appointed home rather than resort to the indignity of charging in public with the masses.)

Further details on the Specter remain scarce, including pricing. While early rumors say the new vehicle may share engines with BMW’s i7, a spokesperson also declined to discuss the upcoming vehicle’s drivetrain.

Rolls-Royce News works to follow parent company BMW AG as much as anything else. BMW recently unveiled its very first all-electric SUV, the BMW iX, which will start delivery in March 2022. It will soon start delivering its i4 all-electric sedan as well. Earlier this month, the automaker increased its battery cell orders to $ 24 billion to keep pace with growing demand for electric cars. During the first half of 2021, electric vehicles represented 11% of the group’s deliveries.

Meanwhile, rival Bentley has announced that it will launch a fully electric vehicle by 2025. Bentley has been selling hybrid vehicles for years.

Specter will be built on the aluminum space architecture currently featured in the $ 455,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom sedan and designed to support all future Rolls-Royce powered cars. The company says it is currently undergoing tests by company engineers to ensure its indestructibility – a simulation that approaches “400 years of use.”
