Children’s store organizes formula donation and collection for those in need
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) — A local children’s resale store is trying to help parents struggling with the current baby formula shortage, but formula is spreading fast.
“Yesterday we received three cases of one type and then about seven cans of another type,” said Sara O’Bannon, Kid to Kid store manager. “We’ve been distributing all of this since this morning and we’re currently very low.”
In just 24 hours, the store ended up with a can. These are donations only, and the store will work to get the cans to the families who need them most.
O’Bannon, a mother herself, said one of the many problems babies face when formula is changed is stomach issues.
“[These are] hypoallergenic, it’s hard to find and so it’s very important to be able to pass that on to a baby who needs it, it will help that baby not have stomach problems, not have gas, not having to go to the doctor,” O’Bannon said.
Abigail Barreras is a first-time mother who had to give up dairy to breastfeed her daughter, Storie. Many of Storie’s friends also rely on formula due to their dairy allergies. This shortage has been a big conversation with moms in the area.
“A lot of them are taking sensitive formula and they can’t find that, so their babies have tummy issues which I know are horrible,” Barreras said.
Relief for parents struggling to find formula is on the way. An overseas shipment landed in the United States this week, but the White House said it would be inspected before distribution.
Barreras said any community help is vital for parents.
“Any help has always been important even if people didn’t realize it, so especially in something as important as infant formula and food like feeding your baby, it’s a big deal. And I ‘really appreciate that there are people out there who want to help other moms,’ she said.
Kid to Kid relies on donations to provide formula milk to families in need. If you have an unopened box of formula that you don’t need, you can drop it off at Kid to Kid located at 910 N Earl Rudder Fwy, Suite 350.
If you need formula, Kid to Kid will keep Facebook up to date with inventory.
