Cross Keys Scholars Athletes Get Generous Donations – DeKalb County School District

“I didn’t think we would ever get something like this.”

There was no way COVID-19 could keep the Cross Keys High School (CKHS) athletic department down.

Thanks to Brooks Running and Dick’s Sporting Goods, the school received running shoes, gym bags filled with other activewear, and a generous check for $13,000 from the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation on Thursday, April 21 at the ‘school.

These donations will go a long way toward the school’s efforts to renew its athletics program, which has been negatively impacted by the pandemic. CKHS athletes and coaches believe this incredible sportswear donation and funding from these retail giants will help accelerate this process.

“It went from the notion of getting football gear to all of the athletes getting gear. They were more than willing to work with us, and it’s a very benevolent gift,” said the CKHS athletic director and football coach, John Bowen.

Cross Keys director Dr. Brittany Cunningham said the generous donations are just the boost the athletic program needs.

“We are in the rebuilding phase with a lot of our sports teams, and this donation will really help us get started next season in terms of resources so coaches can focus on the fundamentals and skills to get our kids ready. It’s a really generous gift,” said Dr Cunningham.

Sophomore Jonathan Rodriguez, a member of the football and track teams, was amazed by the generous donations.

“It’s awesome,” Coach Bowen said. “It lets kids know that someone is there to stand up for them, give to them and want them to succeed.”

With his new gear in his hands, Rodriguez said he plans to practice more.

“I will come to our track more often to do sprints and one-kilometre races to prepare for next season,” he said. “I hope it’s better [season].”
