El Paso car dealerships watch rising gas prices and demand for cars

Consumers continue to buy new and used cars

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — As gasoline prices hit record highs again, some car buyers are looking to trade in their cars for more efficient models.

Midweek, the national average was $4.25 a gallon, eight cents higher than Tuesday.

Luis Acosta, managing director of Charlie Clark Nissan, said that while some people are looking for smaller cars, they are watching gas prices, but don’t think that will have a major impact on the market – just yet .

“Rising gas prices are certainly a decrease in sales of larger vehicles, say cylinders, pickup trucks and going more into a necessity, which is gas savers, small units, four cylinders, can -be six cylinders at most,” Acosta said. .

However, Acosta said that since the pandemic there has been a significant increase in demand for cars, especially used cars, so he said he doesn’t think sales will suffer anytime soon.

“I don’t think the price of gasoline has been a major topic of conversation when consumers are buying vehicles. I think the main concern is just having a reliable vehicle,” Acosta said.

Acosta said the dealership has electric cars, but said there aren’t enough people making the switch to see a major trend.

“The market still doesn’t have the demand, still not as big as we think,” Acosta said. “I know from other sources that we’re looking at around 2030 we’ll be somewhere under 60% range, 60% electric cars. And these are the projections with the manufacturers.

Meanwhile, car buyer Carlos Flores said he just bought a new Nissan Altima after trading in his Ford Expedition.

“{Before} when you put in $20 it’s half tank, but now the prices are going up it’s only quarter tank and a lot of people want small calls, not big cars,” Flores said.

For now, Acosta said he believes the increase in demand for cars will continue despite rising gasoline prices.
