Salvation Army of Grand Junction sees drop in donations

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – The Salvation Army Grand Junction Donation Center has been in its new home for over a month now. Overall things are going well, but they have seen a drop in donations since the big move.

The move came with the goal of helping to better serve the community.

“A lot of our donors were saying Clifton is a bit too far,” said Jon-Mark Lamb, youth coordinator for The Salvation Army. “So we decided to move it here so that we could adapt to that, as well as help our community a little better, because now if someone needs a voucher, they can just walk by. Our central building is right next door, so instead of having to drive across town, they can just walk across the street to get their voucher.

The new location is 1155 N. Fourth St. in Grand Junction.

Lamb says they believe a big part of the problem with getting donations stems from people not knowing where the donation center is.

“That’s been our biggest thing is we’ve just been working to get the word out, and so that takes time,” Lamb said. “Because we moved a little over a month ago. That’s been our biggest fight, letting people know.

But with fewer donations, there are fewer things that can benefit someone in need.

“Because donations have been slow, we have less stuff on the floor,” Lamb added. “Our grand opening was a great success. We just didn’t have the stock, so that’s, that’s been the challenge.

Lamb says they have a lot of clothes in the donation center, but their biggest need is for household items like dishes and random small electronics.

We often see the Salvation Army collecting donations during the holidays. Although it helps them in the mission, Lamb says there is a year-round need.

“We work all year round. We have all kinds of things going on,” Lamb said. “The thrift store is there to support that, and yes, we are still in need. There is always something that could help us continue our mission here.

Lamb said they’re still here and happy to get any donations they can get.

The Donation Center accepts donations Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
