Suspect in stolen vehicle crashes into squad cars before high-speed chase down I-494

A man is in custody after crashing a stolen van into squad cars and leading officers on a high-speed chase Sunday morning in Bloomington, police said.

According to the Bloomington Police Department, around 5 a.m., officers responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle found a pickup truck with a plow parked in a commercial lot in the 6500 block of Cecilia Circle. A person who appeared to have passed out was inside.

The vehicle matched the description of a van that had been reported stolen in Brooklyn Park. When the driver woke up, he fled from officers, hitting patrol cars as he exited the parking lot, police said.

Officers followed the suspect as he got onto Interstate 494 and headed east, reaching speeds in excess of 90 mph, according to police. Aid agencies deployed stop sticks on I-494 to disable the suspect vehicle’s tires, and the chase ended after a Bloomington squad car performed a PIT maneuver, causing car stuck in snow off Dodd Road in Eagan.

According to police, the driver then appeared to be holding a handgun to his temple. Officers began to negotiate with the suspect and were eventually able to get him out of the van and into custody. Police found a firearm inside the vehicle.

The suspect was arrested at the Bloomington Police Department on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and fleeing police in a motor vehicle.
