Thousands of runners raise awareness of organ and tissue donation at Donor Dash in Philadelphia – CBS Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — There were many runners on Sunday morning, some of whom were raising awareness of one of the most important gifts: the gift of life. Thousands of Donor Dash runners have raised awareness of the power of organ and tissue donation.

“To really showcase transplantation that works,” said Richard Hasz, CEO of Gift of Life.

This year, recipient donor Brian Rath celebrates his 10th anniversary of receiving a liver transplant.

“I was told that if I made it past five years, then my life could be a normal life expectancy,” Rath said. “I’ve spent five years now.”

If you weren’t running, you were walking.

“I am a proud donor mother,” said Dawn Ortiz.

Donor families held beautiful, heartfelt signs in memory of those who gave the gift of life like Ricky.

Ortiz has been volunteering for years and each year she is grateful that her son’s organs have given someone else another chance at life. Similar to Carol McCloud’s family.

“He was able to save four people with his gift of life,” McCloud said.

As these donor families began their journey, others ended their journey like Amy Yanack, who will continue to give back in honor of her father, Leo. And she hopes others will follow.

“It can change someone’s life,” Yannack said. “I am grateful.”
