Toys for Tots is looking for help finding a Bay Area warehouse to store donations ahead of the holidays

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – For more than 70 years, ABC7’s parent company, Disney, has supported the US Marine Corp Toys for Tots foundation. They kicked off the holiday season by donating half a million dollars to the organization nationwide.

$ 25,000 of this amount will be used to purchase toys for locals in San Mateo, San Francisco and Marin counties.

But this year, the Marines need help with more than toys.

At this time of year, we typically see festive images of Marines picking up toys for the Toys for Tots donation campaign across the Bay Area.

But instead of meeting at the San Mateo Events Center like last year, we headed to the base parking lot at the US Marine Corp Training Center in San Bruno, where the PODS storage units replace a real facility.

“COVID has changed a lot, but we are coping, we have to do it. There are a lot of children who need toys. We will do what we have to do, ”said Staff Sergeant Josh Garza.

This year is different because in addition to the need for 40,000 to 60,000 toys, there is also a call for warehouse space to house all of these items.

Sergeant Garza says, “We’re one of the largest toddler toy areas in the United States,” and they need about 50,000 square feet of space.

“Even though it’s smaller, we can adapt and overcome. That’s what the Marine Corps does,” Garza explains.

After affecting 25 different establishments, it appears that the pandemic is causing a lack of space.

“They can’t afford to give us space. There are no warehouses to donate or there is a business boom in different industries, so there are not enough warehouses to donate. give us.” said the sergeant. Garza.

The need for space, however, is only temporary. The collection stops mid-December and from there the toys will be sorted and distributed.

One thing is not lacking: that holiday spirit.

Sgt. Garza beams: “I love every second! It’s a good thing, it’s a great experience and you can meet a lot of people and help a lot of children. I think that’s the most important thing.”
